The national registry of certified medical examiners (National Registry) is a federally mandated program that requires practitioners who perform interstate commercial motor vehicle (CMV) physicals to complete an accredited training program every 5 years and successfully pass a test every ten years.

Who needs to become a certified medical examiner?

All physicians (MDs and DOs), Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Chiropractors who wish to perform physical examinations on interstate commercial motor vehicle drivers for fitness for duty certification.

When is this due?

Beginning May 21 2014, only certified medical examiners, who are listed on the national registry, will be permitted to perform the CMV DOT physicals for the FMCSA.

How do I become a Certified Medical Examiner?

Instructions:

  2. In order to receive CME Credit you must view all course slides and successfully complete the post-test.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, print out your certificate of completion.
  4. Register with the National Registry System and receive a unique identification number at http://nationalregistry.fmcsa.dot.gov.
  5. Schedule a date and time to take a test at an approved FMCSA testing center. You must bring government issued identification, a printed copy of valid license in healthcare profession, and the certificate of completion from step 2. http://nationalregistry.fmcsa.dot.gov
  6. After passing the exam, practitioners can be listed on an online directory on the National Registry website. Examiners who do not initially pass the certification or recertification may retest an unlimited number of times within 3 years after completing initial training but must wait 30 days before retaking the exam.
  7. Maintain certified medical examiner status by completing periodic training specified by FMCSA every 5 years, passing the FMCSA Medical Examiner Certification Test every 10 years, and comply with monthly submissions and periodic audits. Certified medical examiners must electronically transmit results on a monthly basis via a secure FMCSA designated website and retain report of each medical certificate for at least 3 years.
